In this piece, the VICE News Tonight team stitched together the stories of multiple people who returned home during the pandemic—and felt forced back into the closet. Anonymous stories of families who couldn’t accept a gay child were woven together with stories of loves ripped apart through fluid, ever-changing, hand-drawn animation. The graphics team put an extra emphasis on symbology, including a house that feels more like a cage and a flower wilting back to a bud. Humans were genderless and soft, giving a piece that could have been upsetting and hard to watch a real warmth.
